Reflective Essay

Telling My Story: Writing for Engineering Course

One of the first things that Professor Bubrow hammered into our brains was the importance of writing. Before the class I had a preconceived notion that I would take the class for my credits. Little did know, how much I would develop as a person and in my writing in just a semester.

Resume and Cover Letter

I’ve always wondered why I never got a job. At the beginning I thought it was my lack of experience, not filling the requirements, or not having connections. However, it was not the case; it was my resume. In the class I learned to write thinking about who my audience is, actions words that show my proficiency my bullet points, and tailoring relevant experience to the job. For the Cover Letter, I learned to use LinkedIn to search for jobs that I would apply for internships to future careers.

Lab Report

The lab report was a done using rolling two-6 sided dice to find which sum had the highest probability. The professor was very detailed in telling us the requirements but that did not stop my from reading my textbook to make sure I did not mess up a step. Moreover, using a online dice roller and citation generator I synthesized data and citations. I focused primarily on the audience and the purpose, which was winning in gambling.

Group Proposal

The group proposal was done with me and my partners of Black and Yellow. The topic was a project proposal of making a new student center. For the first week, we brainstormed if we would want a new one in a completely different location or either revamp the current one. Additionally, we decided what types of questions and data to collect in our surveys. The use of technology really helped in making graphs and diagrams of how the center would look like. While collecting our data and looking for secondary research my group finished drafting the format. We began collaboration by assigning everyone their own individual floor for their own niche and interest. We used online sources to read peer-reviewed articles and derive the cost of the materials. I really learned teamwork and patience during the entire process. One of the soft skills was information literacy, learning how to use CUNY libraries to find those sources.

Technical Description

The technical description was based on my intended major, Computer Engineering or Computer Science. The topic I chose was about Virtual Reality Gloves. I chose to limit the word’s on the presentation and only chose important aspects about the gloves. I cited the cost and the names of the products also including the features that makes each one unique. I involved past and future developments in VR and sensory issues. Also highlighted companies trying to expand their grasp in the virtual realm. Since this was nearing the end of the semester I was able to use the new skills and skills I haven’t focused as much like speech.

When I put this course in my schedule, I did not know what to expect. Maybe I expected it to be writing about engineering terminology for my intended major. Though I realize that even if I switch my major I will not regret my decision. This class that developed me most this year (not just the semester!), in information literacy, communication, grammar, and philosophy. This will remain with me throughout my life. Now that this essay is done, it’s time to look towards the future.
